What I Would Buy if I Wasn't Expecting, and What I'm Buying Instead
But first a big thank you!!
I can’t thank you enough for the kind words and messages I’ve received since Sunday. It’s a relief to have finally shared the news and no longer hide my growing bump and changing body. I feel so grateful on so many levels - to be pregnant, to be feeling good, and to have found myself in such a supportive, thoughtful community.
If you’re also pregnant, congrats!!! I hope I can be somewhat of a resource for you during this time. If you couldn’t care less about maternity clothes or pregnancy purchases, thanks for sticking with me. I promise my TRR finds and shopping requests aren’t going anywhere.
Will I make being pregnant my new personality? I’ll try not to but I can’t say for sure…
Here’s everything I would buy if I wasn’t expecting:

Ok fine, I wouldn’t buy these, pregnant or not, because I have never, and will never be, a short shorts girl. But I will still admire them from afar.
Here’s what I’m buying instead:
As I’m sitting here, I’m thinking, 'I’m really struggling with tops’ but then I realized… I’m also really struggling with bottoms. And I know this is only the beginning. I’ve placed quite a few orders lately, and have been partaking in my fair share of trial and error. I’m still figuring out what works for me and my new body, but here are some things I’ve been relying on, and some things I’m eyeing.
I sized up in my favorite tee, so at least I have that to comfort me. I’m also considering a second color in this sweater. When my grey one first arrived, I wasn’t totally sold and even considered sending it back…and then promptly proceeded to wear it every single day for a week straight. It’s a great sweater, pregnant or not, but the thick material and wider bottom make it extra pregnancy friendly. I went with a M.
I’ve been noticing that I’m wearing a lot of black and it’s feeling harsh. This blazer (blazers have been another comfort piece for me) caught my eye and I could use something white.
I have one of these jumpsuits and have been obsessively washing it so that I can wear it daily, which makes me feel like it’s time to order a 2nd and 3rd. It’s so unbelievably comfortable that the negative of having to undress when you pee (many, many times a day) is outweighed. Also available in non maternity.
Pantsss. I won’t focus on it too much because 1. I’ve beaten the horse 2. they aren’t even available anymore, but I truly don’t know where I would be without my Lisa Yang cashmere pants. But moving on from those, I just ordered this pair to try for an every day casual pant, and I have high hopes, and these for a dressier option for night, but could work just as well during the day.
Leggings…I have always been extremely particular when it comes to leggings (nothing else though ;)), and we’ll put part of the blame on sensory issues. I have been desperate to find a nice looking, comfortable pair. Beyond Yoga is the only pair I’ve really ever found comfortable and their marled fabric doesn’t exactly pass outside of athleisure. I passionately hated the Toteme pairs I tried, and have these on the way, which I’m hopeful about considering how incredibly comfortable these are from the same line. But taking any and all recommendations!
While looking presentable is always on my mind… it’s not necessarily always priority #1 if we’re being honest. Comfort trumps everything, and is the real motivation behind my shopping obsession; I just want to feel good. And aside from this sweater, button downs have been doing that for me lately, and will surely continue to be a staple in my pregnancy wardrobe. I’ve been gravitating towards oversized vintage options (like this and this) because they feel worn in and laid back.
Oleema Miller, one of my more mood-boosting follows, is also pregnant. I’d been wanting a pregnancy pillow but often fall into decision paralysis (if you haven’t searched pregnancy pillows...or been served absurd amounts of ads for them, the options are…endless) so when she shared the pillow she’s been using, I was thrilled for my quest to finally come to an end, and immediately ordered it.
I’ve always been intrigued by this line, and now feels like my time.
That’s all for now, but lots more soon!
I'm so happy for you! I was also adverse to maternity-wear when I was pregnant - just felt like a waste to buy something for such a specific period. My favorite pieces ended up being the Norma Kamali splat leggings and Enza Costa silk rib knit dresses. I took both in my pre-pregnancy size, and they carried me through the second and third trimesters. I'm excited to see what you come up with!
Congratulations!! And please don't stop with pregnancy content, there is a dearth of maternity recs from stylish people
