A relaxed pair of red pants are an easy, low stakes way to add some color into your wardrobe this summer, and keep things from feeling too monotonous.

If red pants sound intimidating, I’m here with receipts that say otherwise. You may, or may not, be surprised that they probably work with most of the things you already have in your closet.

I’ve been reaching for this pair again and again, because 1. they fit and 2. they’re a welcomed alternative to black or white pants (my only other real options at the moment). They’re a nice weight for a linen pant to wear around the city, and I appreciate the cropped silhouette, which saved me a trip to the tailor. I find the pockets on the butt to be a well thought out, flattering touch.

Other red pants that caught my eye: the linen simple pant, available for preorder (they seem like a longer, slightly softer, lighter linen than the Reformation pair), and this relaxed fit from Ciao Lucia.

If I wasn’t 8 months pregnant and could actually wear most things in my closet, I would have paired these pants with a white knit halter from Khaite, similar to this, and this one from J Crew. But for now a plain white tank and a cashmere sweater will do.

I also love these pants with your favorite white t-shirt, for running errands, grabbing coffee, or for a travel day.

They could also be dressed up with a little black tank and heel. My current version of this is a knit and flat sandal, but you get the idea.

And for the final groundbreaking pairing, you could wear a full red look, brought to you by a coordinating red top. I love these tie poplin pants with the matching strapless top. Or you could do the linen pants with a classic crew or this open back linen top.
