Dressing for Saturday Night
Tips to avoid the all too relatable experience of trying on everything in your closet and running out of the house with a pile of rejects on the bed
It seems as though the constant quest for “Going Out Tops” is something plaguing many of us and our search engines, year after year. But perhaps Saturday night dressing is less about “the top”, and more about…literally everything else.
I’d argue that the top is the least important component when getting dressed for a night out. The shoe, belt, necklace and jacket are what make all the difference and leave you with a reliable rotation of pieces to mix and match, always ensuring you have something to wear that you feel good in. With the right others, you could wear a white tank every weekend, and still manage to serve a worthy look. Suggestions and examples below.
The Belt
My personal favorite component in the mix. I wear a belt more often than not, but intentionally make it a focal point in my night out looks. And I’d like to think it works. I practically live in the belt we all know and love (more sizes and variations available for preorder here), but am ready to add some fresh alternatives into the rotation. The choices I’m considering: patent croc with a gold buckle, and on the opposite end of the spectrum, white leather with silver accents. Another timeless option I always come back to.
This Magda Butrym western belt for less than $200 also immediately caught my eye.
Etsy has an underrated selection of unique, one-of-a-kind belts. This vintage Gucci is calling me, and someone absolutely needs this, which closely resembles the Bruno belt. This is another great option, that can be worn day or night. If you’re looking for something to make a more powerful statement, this vintage red belt could be your answer. Another slightly more subtle red option. These antique silver belt buckles are another great find, here, here and here. Also love the buckle on this one.
The Necklace
An easy way to add interest to a simple black top, or a bare décolleté. You can never go wrong with this, but I equally love these vintage Elsa Peretti pendants from TRR. Thierry Mugler, cool. Other fun options: Ben-Amun and Agmes.
Not a necklace, but earrings pack a similar punch. These are amazing, and while I don’t have my ears pierced, these are seriously tempting me. Insane.
The Boots
If I could, I’d take these in every color way. Beige + black has been my combo of choice lately, so naturally these boots are perfection to me. A black boot is always a safe bet, and if you’re looking for a do-it-all boot, these slightly more relaxed options can work day or night. Other contenders include these Staud boots and this suede pair.
Leather Jacket
We can always count on a long leather jacket to bring some edge to a look. 4 of my favorites (at 4 different price points): Reformation, Jil Sander via Vestiare, Maje, and Toteme. This cropped leather jacket is also perfect (love anything that can be worn as a jacket or alone as a shirt). Also this. And let’s not forget Poshmark.
Leather doesn’t always have to be black. Example A and B.
Blazers
A blazer is the simplest way to balance out a sexier, skimpier top. I’ve been reaching for this lately, but this will never get old.
I will always have a soft spot for a shrunken blazer that can be worn as a top (perhaps because it’s the only way my moms vintage blazers will fit me), like these - A), B), C), D). And speaking of blazers as tops, I love love this. And am all for how it’s styled on the site.
Statement Coat - see here.
Denim
Black denim is hard to get right, but Khaite finally nailed it with their Prescott wash (I don’t care for the Wilcox), most recently available in The Abigail. I'm also intrigued by The Collection, Reformation’s recent line, specifically the Magnolia in Westport and the Juniper.
Non denim pant options - I recently found the perfect pair of black leather pants. I wear the S and they’re perfectly oversized (and extremely comfortable). My two tried and true pairs, Re/Done (size down) and Adapte. These also look nice.
Pumps
An alternative to the boot. Top pick: croc embossed + red. And in the name of adding subtle interest - pony hair and a pop of color.
A patent leather slingback is always a good idea. As are these.
The Bag
Nobody does a little going out bag like The Row. This sleek and minimal shoulder bag is a dream, and if you’re as into white leather as I am, you’re in luck. It can also be worn under your arm as a clutch, and what’s chicer than that? The 90’s bag will forever be a favorite. Glove bag, on sale. This lesser known line makes similar looks for less. Another similar look for less.
Underneath it All
What we’re wearing underneath - potentially the closet alternative to my favorite vintage Prada tanks. These are also great and can be worn two ways. I’m always in for anything high neck. Other contenders: an elevated take on a simple tank, an ultra thin + light long sleeve, a cashmere tee and a fitted button down. I like to be comfortable and cozy, even when I go out, so surprise, more cashmere (I have something similar and reach for it on a weekly basis). Another have and love.
Some sexier, lacier (Khaite) options - brown silk Dolce, similar in black. Perhaps the best version here? Stella McCartney lace camisole, which reminds me of this Saint Laurent. Also lacey + sheer.
A uniform works for a reason, so don’t feel pressure to reinvent the wheel. What’s your go to Saturday night formula?
Must confess I purchased the khaite boots upon seeing this and they just came and wow they are beautiful and perfect - thank you for the rec!!!
