I had the absolute pleasure of talking with Take the Toys from the Boys about my love for designer vintage. Take the Toys from the Boys examines trends, explores tastemakers, and initiates thoughtful conversations around fashion. The interview lives over on her Instagram, and I thought I would republish a shoppable version alongside my responses here too.
What first drew you to vintage fashion - what makes vintage shopping so special compared to buying new?
My mom worked at Barneys in the 90s and amassed quite a collection of designer pieces over the years. I’ve always borrowed from her, and over time realized that the pieces I was reaching for most were her vintage things. It’s hard to find the same silhouettes now, made from that same quality. They just don’t make things the same way anymore.

I love the hunt and thrill of buying vintage, and love that it makes my style feel so personal to me. There's also the sustainability component. I'd so much rather keep incredible clothing with history and meaning in circulation, than try to keep up with the less thoughtful and unnecessary constant influx of newness.

What are some of the most exciting or rare vintage pieces you’ve come across?
One of my best vintage finds to date is a Dolce & Gabbana longsleeve corset chiffon lace gown. I have yet to wear it but I feel like that's the best way to shop and curate a wardrobe of items you truly love. Instead of shopping for specific moments and forcing a purchase for a specific occasion, buy what really resonates with you and work them into your moments. Not the other way around. When it comes to vintage shopping, if you see something good, buy it, even if you don’t have the right time and place for it yet.
I also recently found an insane pair of brown leather Gucci pants on The RealReal that fit like a glove.
For someone completely new to vintage, where’s the best place to start? Are there any thrift stores, flea markets, or online destinations you would recommend?
If you’re overwhelmed by the digging, Desert Vintage, RLT and Sorbara’s have excellent curated edits to shop from. Resee also has a great selection, especially for event wear. There are great finds to be had on Vestiaire Collective, Etsy, eBay, 1stDibs and Poshmark. The RealReal is one of my personal favorites because there’s a constant flow of new arrivals, and the filters streamline the process of sorting through. It’s also one of the few places you can return (most items), which is rare for vintage.
What are the best strategies for finding hidden gems?
Checking often, demonstrating patience, and enjoying the hunt. Jump on the things that resonate with you.
Are there any key things you look for when evaluating a vintage piece?
I don't mind a little wear in my items, but always make sure to thoroughly go over any flaws so there are no surprises. And don't get too caught up on the sizing. Vintage often runs smaller, so don't be afraid to go big. You might be surprised to find a size L that fits like a S, or you can always embrace a slightly oversized fit, or take something to the tailor.
How do you balance vintage and modern pieces in your outfits?
Most things in life are about balance. If you're wearing a worn in jacket, pair it with a crisp white t-shirt to keep things from feeling too seasoned. But I do love a vintage head to toe look.

If someone wants to start incorporating vintage into their everyday wardrobe, what are five must-have vintage staples? (Specific products, brands, eras etc.)
1. Vintage Levi’s, a no brainer
2. A leather jacket, in a blazer silhouette, either something shrunken and fitted or longlined. You can't go wrong with Gucci or Prada.
3. Vintage cashmere! Either a tank or a fitted sweater. Vintage Prada cashmere is unmatched, and Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren also have great things.
4. A good coat. Either something nylon and weatherproof, or a suede shearling. Again, Prada every time. Jil Sander also does both well.

5. A pair of sunglasses, my favorite are Giorgio Armani.
Are there any specific vintage trends making a big comeback?
70s bohemia is obviously having a resurgence… so think loose, flowy, silk and lace. Searching for Hermes, Chloe, Pucci, La Perla will all yield good results.
What’s one underrated vintage era or trend you think deserves more attention?
It's certainly not underrated but Tom Ford for Gucci, and anything 90s Prada, will always be deserving of attention.

With summer approaching, I feel like vintage beachwear gets overlooked. Dolce and Gabbana, Alaia, JPG, Pucci, and Missoni all make fun resort wear. I also love antique french, light white dresses for hot days.

What’s your dream vintage find that you haven’t gotten your hands on yet?
I am dying for a Serpenti Tubogas, from the 50’s or 70’s. One day.
